Mazury in Dąbrowa Górnicza – Is It Possible?
The Pogoria lakes, a group of four lakes, are one of the most interesting and attractive places in Dąbrowa Górnicza. This small lake district is used for tourism and recreation. Although all the lakes were formed in the same way, each one is different and offers unique attractions. For those who enjoy longer stays by the lake, Pogoria I is best, with the most developed accommodation base. For fans of wildlife and fishing, Pogoria III is ideal. If you love sailing or windsurfing, Pogoria III is the place for you. In short – everyone will find something for themselves.
If you’re not a strong swimmer, you can still feel safe. During the summer season, all the beaches at Pogoria are monitored by lifeguards from the WOPR (Water Volunteer Rescue). And what if you prefer to admire the scenery from a bicycle saddle rather than a beach towel? Pogoria has something for you too… Each of the four lakes is surrounded by marked paths and bike trails, suitable even for the youngest riders.
Friendly Shores
Some say that Dąbrowa Górnicza is defined not by its industry but by its water. Although water bodies (excluding Pogoria IV) and rivers make up only 2% of the city’s area, aquatic centers, sailing clubs, and related sports are very popular here. This unique enthusiasm for water was recognized by the organizers of the national Wind and Water Fair in 2005. In the city category, Dąbrowa Górnicza, alongside Giżycko and Polańczyk, became a laureate of the first edition of the Friendly Shore Award.
Sailing and Volleyball
There are several sailing and water sports clubs around the lakes, including Tramp, Fregata, Hutnik, Jawor, Zefir, and Jacht Klub Pogoria III. These clubs organize training sessions, courses, and camps. Their members participate in inland and sea sailing and regattas. The areas around the reservoirs also host many events, organized by, among others, the Sports and Recreation Center in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Beach volleyball tournaments, triathlons, bike races, and fishing competitions are just some of them. The city beaches on the shores of Pogoria I and Pogoria III are very popular. Lifeguards from WOPR and officers from the water police station ensure the safety of beachgoers.
Underwater Expeditions
Divers are regular visitors to Pogoria III. They typically explore the depths around the sailing marina – from the western side or on the so-called “columns” – from the eastern side. The latter, the deepest part of the reservoir, owes its name to the submerged construction elements. Divers descend here to 17 meters, while the average depth of the reservoir is 6 meters. The underwater life includes pike, eels, perch, grass carp, catfish, and roach. Visibility underwater is among the best in the country throughout the year. Special buoys visible on the surface signal the presence of divers.
Pogoria is…
- A river, the left tributary of the Black Przemsza, with sources on the site of the former Katowice steelworks,
- A picturesque district of the city, annexed to Dąbrowa Górnicza in 1963,
- A group of four water reservoirs, numbered I to IV,
- A sailing vessel built in 1980 that reached Antarctica and sailed around Cape Horn.
